Setup, Initial Verification, and Configuration
Before beginning the test, the specifications of all components of the software-defined power system infrastructure must be individually evaluated to ensure that they can collectively meet the intended purposes.
System Monitoring
The system consists of hardware, software-defined layer, and applications. Communications and decision-making delays must be monitored end-to-end and between each layer, where possible. Additionally, performance aspects of both the system and the virtual appliance software must be baselined and then continuously supervised.
Redundancy and Failover Mechanism
The increase in flexibility that a software-defined system offers can result in increased levels of redundancy. Beginning with eliminating any single point of failure, station and process bus communications are interfaced with multiple servers staged as active-active or active-standby, and each physical and virtual device’s implementation must be carefully considered as system complexity is balanced with reliability.
Hardware and Software Resiliency
The capacity of both the hardware and software of the vPAC architecture to continuously operate is a key factor in the organizational choices made on how to implement this technology. Particularly in a utility OT environment, it is expected that components can either survive, or quickly recover from, unexpected events occurring on or within critical services.
