The PE to Unmanaged CE Pings default remote ping group is used by MPLS Manager to generate all possible PE-to-remote-Unmanaged-CE pings in a VPN, and to monitor and analyze the ping test results to determine PE-to-Unmanaged-CE reachability. It has a single, valid setting named PE to Unmanaged CE Ping Settings.

This setting determines (1) the creation of remote ping entries in the SNMP Ping MIB tables on the source PEs and (2) the polling intervals that are used by MPLS Manager to monitor the ping test results. MPLS Manager monitors the ping test results by probing the Ping MIB tables on the source PEs.

By default, each PE in a VPN pings every local and remote Unmanaged CE or multi-VRF CE in the VPN. A remote Unmanaged CE is an Unmanaged CE that is attached to a peer PE.

The term Unmanaged CE, as used here, refers to a CE that is neither in the repository of the MPLS Manager nor in the repository of the source IP Availability Manager.

For each PE-to-Unmanaged-CE remote ping group configured by an administrator, MPLS Manager writes the ping entry to the source PE and periodically refreshes the ping entry in accordance to the “Refresh/calculation interval” on page 152, so that it does not expire until the administrator deliberately disables it.
