To begin metering vCenter Server, you must assign additional profile-driven storage privileges to a vCenter Server user with read-only role.

  • The vSphere administrator is not using conflicting vCenter Server roles.
  • You must assign the vCenter Server permissions at either a Global level or to an object in the object hierarchy.

For full information and best practices about authorization in vSphere, see vSphere Permissions and User Management Tasks in the vSphere Security guide.

  1. Log in to the vSphere Web Client as an administrator, such as [email protected].
  2. Navigate to Administration > Roles.
  3. Create the read-only role.
    1. From the list with sample roles, select the Read-only role, and click the Clone role action icon.
    2. Enter a name for the new role, and click OK.
  4. Assign the profile-driven storage privileges to the newly created role.
    1. Select the newly created role, and click the Edit icon.
    2. From the list with privileges, select profile-driven storage and select the Profile-driven storage view check box.
    3. Click Next.
    4. Click Finish.
  5. Assign the new role to the user which you use for vCloud Usage Meter collection.
  6. Select the vCenter Server for which you want to assign permissions.
  7. Click the Permissions tab.
  8. Select the user to which you want to assign the privileges defined by the selected role.
    1. From the Domain drop-down menu, select the domain for the user.
    2. Enter a name in the Search box or select a name from the list.
The system searches user names, group names, and descriptions.
    3. Select the user.
The name is added to the User/Group list.
    4. From the Role drop-down menu, select the role you created in Step 3.
    5. Click the Propagate to children check box, and click OK.

The server adds read-only vCenter Server permissions to the user.
